PATH Leadership Group · Session 7 · Chairing a meeting
Chair prompt cards.
Things a chair can say to keep a meeting on track and make sure everyone is heard. Cut them out and keep the ones you like. These are starting words — your own words are welcome too.
1
When everyone's talking at once
- Excuse me - it feels like people are talking over each other.
- Can everybody remember to use their cards?
- I think [name] was next.
2
When the meeting goes too fast
- Can we slow down a bit? I want to follow.
- Sorry - can you say that again in simpler words?
- I missed that. What did we just decide?
3
When someone hasn't been heard
- I'd like to hear what [name] thinks about this.
- [Name], you've been listening - what do you reckon?
- Has everyone had a turn? Anyone want to add anything?
4
When the meeting's wandering
- OK, what are we deciding here?
- Let's come back to the agenda.
- Can we summarise what we've agreed?
5
When you don't agree
- I see what you're saying, but I think something different. What I think is...
- Can I add another way of looking at this?
- I'm not sure I agree. Can we talk about it?
6
When you need to pause
- Can we take a 5-minute break?
- I need to step out - start without me.
- I'm getting tired. Can we slow down or come back to this?
